Letter: Protecting the FTC from Special Interest Attacks

While much of our work has been in defense of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), we also support the efforts of the over-100 year old Federal Trade Commission. Recently, powerful special interests convinced the Energy and Commerce Committee to draft (and expect it to vote out soon, likely next week) legislation to severely weaken the FTC's ability to protect the public from identity theft and privacy invasions (including sloppy data security that leads to identity theft), deceptive health marketing claims by sellers of various dangerous or ineffective (or both) products and numerous other last-dollar and other frauds and schemes. We've joined over 30 leading groups in a letter opposing the so-called FTC Process and Transparency Reform Act of 2016 (HR 5510-Burgess (TX)).

Letter Opposing HR 10, The Wrong Choice Act

This is our letter opposing HR 10, the so-called Financial Choice Act, on the House floor today. The bill is the Wrong Choice for consumers, investors, homeowners, taxpayers. It leaves the CFPB as an unrecognizable husk incapable of protecting anyone, including servicemembers and veterans. It also repeals most of the other prudential safeguards enacted in 2010 after the second-worst financial collapse in the nation's history, both brought on by reckless Wall Street practices.

Group Letter Opposing "Equifax Protection Act," HR6743, Luetkemeyer, Prevents State Data Laws

We've joined a group letter from over 25 consumer, civil rights, civil liberties and privacy groups opposing the latest Congressional proposal to exempt banks and other financial institutions, broadly defined to include Equifax and other credit bureaus, from stronger state data security, privacy and data breach protections. These Trojan Horse bills come riding in with tiny protections riding in the saddle, but massive elimination of stronger state laws hidden in the belly of the beasts.
